Have you heard of mantis shrimp? Mantis shrimp are interesting creatures that live in the sea, and their eyes are very unique. They use a property of light called “polarized light” to see their surroundings. This time, we will introduce this “polarized light” and the special eyes of mantis shrimp.

First, let me briefly explain what “polarized light” is. Polarized light is a state in which the waves of light are aligned in a specific direction. For example, light coming from the sun vibrates in different directions, but when that light is reflected by the surface of water, it begins to vibrate in a certain direction. This is polarized light. Polarized light can be obtained by passing light through a polarizing plate manufactured by Luceo.

Mantis shrimp have a special ability to see polarized light. Their eyes have sensors for detecting polarized light that human eyes do not have. This allows them to use the light patterns in the water to find food and enemies. For example, by seeing the light reflected on the water’s surface, they can find out where fish are swimming and read the patterns of the water’s currents. This information is invisible to humans, but very important to mantis shrimp. they use their ability to see polarized light to help them survive and reproduce. In this way, there are many creatures in nature with mysterious abilities that go beyond our imagination.
