Photonics West is the largest event in North America on optical technology, held annually from late January to early February in San Francisco. As a newcomer who joined Luceo in 2022, I would like to share my impressions of attending an overseas exhibition for the first time.
■Exhibition Preparation:
I was very nervous about my first time in America, but I managed to complete the immigration process safely and had the opportunity to see the beautiful streets of San Francisco, including the famous Union Square.
To prepare for the exhibition, we arrived at the Moscone Center the day before and set up our exhibits. We were able to secure a corner booth, allowing us to display our polarimeter and polarizing plates separately.
There were some incidents, such as other booths’ crates being placed in our booth, but we successfully completed preparation. That night, we enjoyed a lavish $20 (approximately 3000 yen) bowl of pork bone ramen to boost our spirits for the upcoming exhibition.
■Exhibition:
Once the exhibition started, many people visited our booth. We also met with our distributors and explained our exhibits together.
However, I struggled with the unfamiliar English and did my best to keep up with my superiors and the distributors’ English. During breaks, I explored various American company booths, which was a stimulating experience not commonly seen in Japan.
One memorable aspect of this exhibition was on the second and third days when a specific company booth offered alcohol, popcorn, and more. This cultural difference from Japan left a strong impression on me.
The three-day exhibition flew by quickly, and I learned a lot and reflected on many points. It was an extremely valuable experience.
